Discover our remarkable history...

At the age of just 20, Eugène Mercier founded his own House and soon began to think big. He revolutionised the world of champagne and set himself a radical challenge: to make champagne – a drink historically reserved for the elite – accessible to all without sacrificing quality. An innovator at heart, he was one of the first in the region to introduce electricity to his cellars in 1886. He was also involved in the early stages of advertising by presenting one of the first commercials created by the Lumière brothers.

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE

At the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, Eugène Mercier presented a giant blending vat containing the equivalent of 200,000 bottles of wine and weighing over 20 tonnes. The vat was the star of the show, rivalled only by the Eiffel Tower.

Travel through Mercier’s 18km of cellars on a driverless train

Discover the House’s heritage, thirty metres beneath the chalky soil of Epernay. Board the Mercier train to travel through a section of the 18 kilometres of single-storey cellars and discover the bas-relief carvings by sculptor Gustave Navlet. Discover the thousands of bottles nestling in our maze of cellars.

*Bas-relief by Gustave Navlet referencing the visit of President Carnot to the Mercier cellars in 1891.

Historical anecdote

In 1891, Eugène Mercier organised a visit to the House’s cellars by horse-drawn carriage with French President Sadi-Carnot.
